Turkey Taco Skillet

I was searching for a healthy and quick recipe the other night that only used ingredients -or Ingredientses as Teresa Giudice likes to say – that I had in my house.  I found this yummy Turkey Taco Skillet dish on Woman’s Day.  I cut a lot of the items out to make it more healthy:

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound(s) ground turkey (97% lean)
  • 1 package(s) (1.25 oz) low-salt taco seasoning mix
  • 2 cup(s) water
  • 1 jar(s) (16 oz) thick & chunky salsa
  • 1 can(s) (11 oz) Mexican-style corn
  • 2 cup(s) instant brown rice
  • 1 cup(s) shredded Mexican or taco cheese blend (did not use)
  • 2 cup(s) shredded lettuce (did not use)
  • 1 large tomato, chopped (did not use)
  • 1/2 cup(s) reduced-fat sour cream (did not use)
  • Serve with: baked tortilla chips (did not use)

Directions:

  1. Cook turkey in a large nonstick skillet over high heat, stirring to break up meat, 5 minutes or until browned. Stir in seasoning mix, water, salsa and corn; bring to a boil. Stir in rice. Cover and remove from heat; let stand 12 to 15 minutes, until liquid is absorbed. Sprinkle with cheese; cover and let stand 1 to 2 minutes to melt cheese.
  2. On plates, top rice mixture with lettuce, tomato and sour cream. Serve with tortilla chips.

First Birthday Party

Wowzers.  I cannot believe this past year has already gone by.  It has been a crazy ride!!  We decided to go all out for babe’s 1st Birthday Party.  (When I say we, I mean I)

They always say when you want to design a room, find a fabric you love and design around that.  I used that for his party since I did not want to do a theme.  I found this party invitation and decided to stick with colors and shapes etc. for the whole theme.

While this is not my child, for the pictures we had babe dress in blue/green and white and bought the same color of balloons for his pictures.  They turned out really cute!

All of the decorations for the party were really simple and not expensive at all.  I bought coordinating ribbon, pom poms and paper for the Cricut and made a lot of the decor myself.

Get Organized!

Have you heard of Thirty-One Gifts?  If not, you should!  My great friend, Sara Hutson, is a consultant and introduced me to their products recently.

They have been fantastic in keeping my home organized.  I use the Utility tote to store all of my cleaning products in and carry them around my home.  And I have the XXL Utility tote that is AH-MAZING for traveling (especially with a baby)!!

If you are interested in their products check out her site here

Fruit Fly Don’t Bother Me

I buy a TON of fruit and cannot stand the annoying fruit flies that I apparently buy along with it. Why are there flies anyway in my fruit??? ANYWAY, I read about a great way to get rid of them and IT WORKS.

Take a small glass, fill it with some Apple Cider Vinegar add some dish soap and BOOM. FRUIT FLIES DIE. They are attracted to the vinegar and once they actually fly into it they get stuck in it because of the soap. Who’d a thunk it?

Can’t Keep Up

I have not posted once in April!! That’s insanity. I’ve been so busy with work and trying to get our house organized and put together for our babe’s 1 year party :) Family room is ALMOST complete – I ended up buying more pillows instead of making more because really… I just don’t have the time to sew EVERYTHING! And I’m waiting on husband to hang the last of the window panels… might be waiting awhile :)

I’ve painted a little play area for bubbies. When I say painted, I mean just white. I have ambitions to add cute stuff to make it look like a play area, but for now… it’s a big white box.

I did do another painting and will post it as soon as we hang it on the wall!

I have not been cooking AT ALL. If you count turkey burgers on the grill and peas in the microwave then yes, I’m a gourmet chef.

I have, however, been making my bed everyday and doing my laundry on Wednesdays and Saturdays (and sometimes Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays)…. you know how it goes…

How to Clean Your House Like A Professional

I found this great post on “Dreaming of Poultry” a blogger who used to work in the hotel industry and gives great advice on how to clean your home.

Most importantly, she says DO NOT USE WATER when you clean your bathroom.  Only use dry rags, except for the inside of the toilet!

1- Clear out all trash and dirty linens (changing linens on Laundry day makes for one less thing to do on cleaning day).

2- Clean the bathroom:

  • Spray the shower walls and the bath tub with a disinfectant spray. Wipe with a clean DRY rag (never use water to clean a bathroom!).
  • Spray the entire exterior of the toilet with a disinfectant, including the pedestal connecting to the floor. Wipe with a clean DRY rag.
  • Use a toilet bowl disinfectant to clean the inside of the toilet, especially underneath the rim.
  • Spray the counter top and sink with a disinfectant spray. Wipe with a clean DRY rag.
  • Clean mirrors, sink faucets and bathtub faucets with window cleaner.
  • Mop floor, being careful to remove all hair

3- Dust furniture

4- Make Beds

5- Vacuum yourself out of the room.

Cleaning Chart!!!

YESSSSSSSS!  I found the ultimate cleaning chart on Pinterest the other day.  I feel like this covers EVERYTHING.  I do not do all of this every week… perhaps I should?  I feel like this is a deep clean chart.  You could probably just edit yours to fit your lifestyle…

If I were to edit this it would say:

“Pick Up Entire House” —> “Start Laundry” —> “Fix Your Favorite Drink”  :)

My Old Vacuum Sucked

This past week I decided to buy a new vacuum cleaner.  We have had our old vacuum for quite some time… I mean like over 5+ years, which means it was probably ready to be thrown away a long time ago, but it seemed to be doing it’s job… until I bought this new Dirt Devil that is bagless and clear.

Now this is pretty disgusting, so don’t judge me.  We have a dog, a black lab, and he sheds a ton, so we have to vacuum or swiffer often… my husband used this vacuum the other night for the first time and just in the FRONT section of our living room (okay? so just half of a room we are talking about here…) the container was HALF WAY FULL of dirt and hair!!!!  So this whole time, my other vacuum was basically just picking up the big things on the top of the carpet, not cleaning deep.

So naturally, I ran around the house in every bedroom trying to see how full i could get the container.  Our master bedroom was pretty bad too.

So… if you have had a vacuum for a few years, I’d suggest trying to get a new one – the one above that we bought was ONLY $40 at The Home Depot :)  I couldn’t even imagine what a $500 Dyson would do to my carpet!

DIY Drip Painting

We all know that buying wall art it not only challenging but also expensive.  Considering we just did our big kitchen reno, I need to be conservative with our family room makeover and do everything on the cheap.

I bought the below painting from Z Gallerie a few years ago for about $175.  I was literally about to throw it away a few weeks ago when I realized that it was a ginormous canvas that could most likely be painted over.

I kept an article from DIY Magazine last month on DIY paintings.   There was this incredible painting style called “Drip Painting.”  Essentially what you do is mix acrylic paints with water in a bottle – shampoo bottle works fine – I used the bottles the hospital sent home with me after giving birth hehe – and you simply pour the mixture from the top of your canvas and let it drip down.  Once it is dry, you flip over your painting and do another color the opposite direction and eventually you end up with something like this:

You cannot tell in this picture but the paints are metallics and they have a really neat sheen to them in the light and they go perfectly with our Family room now… you’ll see that reveal soon enough!
